I've heard mention of web-safe colours (Corel's Photopaint even has a web-safe pallete) but I don't fully understand. On my forum I'm using 161410 for the background (A very dark, almost black, slate colour). I have no idea whether or not this is a web-safe colour and am just wondering what are the consequences of using colours that are not web-safe.

Thanks.

There is no such thing as web-safe colours any more, all browsers and monitors are capable of more than the 216 "web-safe" colours and have been for 3 or 4 years at the very least.
Even mobile phones have 16 million colour screens.

I wouldn't worry about what is "safe" and what is not. You should use colors that will properly convey your message. I am partial to blue because it conveys trust and it is very calming. I am usually against red because it makes your heart race and there is so much on websites already that want to clam people down, not make them jump ship.

Google psychology of color and you will learn a lot more about color for your website.

Yeah, forget about web safe colors. I can say that we have 16 million "limited" colors, but it will look UNLIMITED to you.
