Just had this sent to me.

Survey of Preferences of Screen Readers Users

The "Headings" section is probably the most telling especially for "Heading are for keywords" SEO types. 76% of screen reader users navigate with headings.

Useful data if you include accessibility features in your design and layouts.

And if you don't, why aren't you?

The link was most informative and thank you for submitting the link Chris, I used their Wave Tool, apparently I fall down with the label attribute. The w3schools wouldn't pick that up through their validator, guess I have some work to do. My attitude has always been to code for the disability, this one was a new one on me.

Thanks for the link Chris. Funny though. I went to the page to bookmark at Delicious for further reading and it looks like I had already bookmarked it. Must have come across it in my travels. Thanks for the reminder to read it.

Scanning the survey now made me realize why I'm seeing skip links on a lot of sites. I don't know why, but I hadn't made the connection to screen readers. Now I completely understand how valuable they are.

It's interesting how much more you get from a survey like this than developing solely off accessibility standards. You can have a completely compliant site when it comes to accessibility and still be far off the mark in being helpful to people using a screen reader.
