I need some help getting started on a website...

I'm trying to build a website from scratch. What I want to be able to do is create a table of all of the movies I own, with several columns devoted to Title, Year, IMDB Rating, Whether I've Seen it yet or not, and "details." I also want to be able to hover the mouse over the "details" column of any of the movies, and have a little pop-up message with the box art of the movie, and a short description. No other windows should open up, just a little something like this, but with the box art and movie synopsis. If anyone would like to get me started in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!!!

If I have issues I need to work out I will hire a freelancer from getafreelancer.com
I hope that helped. Best of luck with your website.

Really? You hope that helped? Of course it didn't help! You can obviously hire someone to do something for you if you want, I don't need you to tell me that. I'm asking for help on a specific thing. Like... "how do you do this?".
NOT "Where can I get someone to do this for me if I give them enough money?"
Anyone with half a brain want to help me out, here?

Ideally your movies should go into a database, which you can update easily, and then pull the data from it for your site. That would require something like MySQL (database) and PHP to pull the data out. If you don't want to go that direction, then you can create the data tables from scratch with HTML and CSS, and, in this case, a table would be appropriate.
For the pop-up like the one you linked to, you can do that with CSS, it's called a 'tooltip'. Or, you could check out something like Lightbox or Graybox, which use a bit of unobstrusive javascript for the effect.

Oh please - don't preach to me about tables. Tables are fine for TABULAR DATA, and the DATA from a movie database would be fine in a DATA TABLE.
Web 2.0 has NOTHING to do with tables or not using tables. In fact, it has NOTHING to do with DESIGN at all !!!

Oh, that's nice. He tells you how he would approach your perdicament in an effort to help you, and he also says good luck; then you call him stupid.
Real nice.

First of all you start making the design of your website using Dreamweaver CS4. Once you have made the layout of your website, it will be much easier for you to go ahead towards coding.

Hi, heartbraden!
I suggest you to use <DIV> tag instead of Table. Table will take you in complexity but <DIV> using CSS definitely would help you and it would been easy for you to update your site as well.
Thanks
Qasim Ali.

I understand how easy it is to get frustrated when trying to figure something out. Believe me, sometimes I get so frustrated all I see is recurring images of throwing the chair i'm sitting on through the f-ing wall, lol
But it's vital not to get mad or frustrated at others, no matter how helpful they are to you or not during this process of arriving at a solution. It can only make one more frustrated than they were with originally.
Yelling at tech-support over the phone wont help, either. lol They might even be more inclined to give you a less than perfect answer as a means of "getting back" at you for disrespect, or whatever.
---
now that we got that out of the way. I second Lady n' Red's answer as the best- and the exact answer I would've given to you, heartbraden.
if you are unfamiliar with PHP/MySQL, you will probably need to hire someone to build such a thing for you. I am sorry if that information itself isn't helpful, or a helpful as you would like.
But in order for someone to fully explain this to you (if you are a complete newbie)- they're going to not only have to build the site for you, but explain, at each point- how to connect to MySQL, how to create database tables, how to populate them with info, etc.
And it would be far easier for someone to just build it for you, for money- without given a detail by detail tutorial on the process.
I sincerely hope this helps and put you in the right direction. And if not "the right" direction, than a good one.

As noted above, I would create an .html form and have it submit your movie information into a simple database, or I would find a database program at hotscripts.com (not trying to spam - it's not my site - just the one I use) and use it to enter in your movies name, date, review, info, etc.
Once everything is entered, I would create an .html / .php file that displays the information in the database -- there are many pre-made files you can get for free or on the cheap at hotscripts.com. Simply look under the PHP directory and look under database or form handlers.
Having said that - if you're a beginner - some of these programs can be troublesome, at least the free one's I tend to find are. And the reason behind webpages is to get visitors and make money -- So...
Solution #1
Until you can get your site automated with form handlers and databases, just enter the information manually (in a table if must be) and post it online. Get your site up and running and submitted to Google now -- the longer it's online, the better. Now you have a working site -- even if you have to do things the hard way -- you can get people visiting and commenting on your site...
Solution #2
1) If you don't want try to do the .html yourself
2) Get a CMS program such as Joomla -- it should be offered for free via your webhoster (look on your control panel)
3) get a pre-made template for Joomla - from sitepoint.com (again - not spam -- not my site -- just a good one)
4) Use Joomla to enter in your information - it is user-friendly and can let you type everyting in - insert images- and it will do the formatting for you (and display it with the template you chose)
5) Now you have a decent site up with information that's half-managed by you and half by the Joomla system -- you can take your time learning about databases and form handlers.
If you like my suggestions - please stop by!

regardless
1. i think you should be using tables because that's what you're displaying: a table of information
2. since you already have the hover code where do you want help with.
you should start coding something first then ask us where to help you or else we'd be just making your website for you... if we're going to make your website for you we should just charge you... if we'd charge you than its no dif then what poster #2 had said...
honestly a simple "sorry I'm not looking to hire, could anybody help me with the coding here" would be fine but first insult then calling him names afterward is just flat out inappropriate.. remember, you're asking for help not giving help

If you don't want to hire a professional to do it for you, I suggest you educate yourself with PHP/MySQL then follow LadynRed's advice. And by the way, at least thank the people who took the time in trying to come up with a solution for you, including redneckmark.

Well remember you need to pay for a domain name, and if your going to put movies you own there, if they aren't made from you then I'm not sure if your allowed to upload it. Anyway good luck with your website. Also its probably best to use Dreamweaver for creating it or a notepad, whichever is easier.
