Hi all

As a designer with Wisitech I often deal with clients who want shorter domain names or longer domain names. Plz tell me which one is better in terms of marketing and designing purposes so that I can suggest my clients likewise.

Well this is sort of a catch 22. You need to have domains that are using nice and detailed keywords, search engines will rank these better, but on the other other you don't want to take so much time doing domain names.

Now, you don't want to have a site like www.moneytocashinmycar.com when you can just use cashmycar.com.

You have to think inside and outside the box on this type of problem.

Shorter the better, in my opinion.

Have you toyed around with this tool?
http://www.dailyblogtips.com/how-to-...-domain-names/

It helps you find 4 letter domain names. Roughly 20,000 are still available, according to this blog.

Shorter, no doubt. They are easier to remember, as long as they are not cryptic.

Example:

Website name: Super totally awesome websites for anyone

Bad domain: stawfa.com

Oh, and by the way: 4 letter domain names sold out November 2, 2007.

Longer names are better for search engine rankings if they have keywords in them... other than that you want a short, memorable name.

According to my point of view shorter domain name is much better because it is easy to remember and there is a less chance of spelling mistake as compared to the longer one

Thanks everyone for replying. I even personally think that short and relevant domain names are better. I am going to suggest the same to my client.

I spent a lot of time thinking about my domain name. Whether I should have a long one or short one. I can see that most of you believe that a short one is better.

For me it was between a short name, easy to remember. And a long name, more descriptive.

In the end I chose the long one, because I think that most website names do not get passed along by word of mouth. Especially niche ones. I figured that most of my visitors will come by reference from the Internet and not two people talking at a party exchanging websites they like.

Other advantages with long ones is that you have much more options because not too many long ones are taken. And they stick out more – I find that when I see a long domain name somewhere I usually tend to read it.

Yeah shorter names that are more relevant are the best. People remember a shorter name a lot easier.

Shrter is easier to remember, but longer names may score better in the search engine rankings. Less competition maybe?

Definitely the shorter ones. The shorter, the easier to remember.
