I am kind of wanting to start a little project. I wanna make my own fourm, just like the one you are on, but about something different. How do I go about doing that? What will I need? Is it possible to find someone to host it for me, but I can customize the pages and look to any way that I want?

Thanks...

Look into phpbb and vbulletin for your forum engine. There are plenty of others but these seem to be the most popular. Just about any hosting provider will work but you need to make sure it supports the forum engine you choose. For example, if you choose phpbb you need to make sure your host supports PhP and a database (MySql). There are plenty of templates for the forum engines I previously mentioned but a little knowledge of Html & PhP can certainly help with customization.

First of all you need to know what your forum will be about. Find your niche.

There are several free and low cost hosts that have easy to use forum services built in. Check out google groups. There are two parts to having a forum, maintenance and monitoring. If you use a forum service you won't have to do much maintenance so you can concentrate on learning the monitoring part of the business.

Forums are a lot of work, with very little return, especially early on.

You forum niche choice is important. You can try using vBulletin forum engine since most of the forum sites are using that. Plus you need large hosting space since forums are rapidly growing.

This really all depends on your budget and everything.

There are a couple different forum applications out there PHPBB3 and VBulletin. These are the two most popular ones, the one you are on now is Vbulletin and is the most popular when it comes to these types of forum, but the catch is it has a yearly licencing fee.

Now PHPBB3 is a great software and works great as well and is free, but doesn't have all the things that vbulletin has. So really it is up to you to see exactly what you are looking to build and if you have a budget for it.

As far as hosting, you need to make sure that your hosting company allows a high amount of traffic, because if your forum gets really popular your database and site will be using ALOT of bandwidth.

Good luck to you.

Personally I always use Fluxbb as I feel it offers more benefits to vBulletin and PHPBB3 It doesn't have half as many features (for example: no private messaging, no polls etc) but it is lightweight, fast and won't drain your server resources.

Any feature you need such as PM's can be added through modifying the source code, and while you will need a little experience with handling PHP/mysql you'll find you can customise the forum to your exact needs given a little time. I prefer this approach over PHPBB3/vBulletin etc basically because half of the features aren't really needed (in my opinion) and as such are just wasting resources.

There really are dozens of scripts to choose from. You might want to take a look at forummatrix.org where you can compare a few dozen scripts to find the right match for you
