I think that largely depends on the industry you're in, along with soooo many other factors. Some companies lump web design in with IT, and IT is almost always a layoff target because management still too often sees IT as too much overhead rather than the support system for their core business and competitive edge.

I think there are just too many variables for any kind of hard and fast answer.

I hate to be this direct with this, but since you asked it, if you have the 'proper' skill-set, which would pretty much be a little bit of skill in all areas of design, I'm sure you can find some kind of work in the field. Otherwise, you will have to wait like many of us. But hey, does anyone know where I can find a descent job in the pc security arena? I'm good in that department.

Have you thought about blogging? Since you're good in that area, get yourself up to expert level by publishing articles and blog posts. As you build your credentials, you'll add value (visitors) to your site. When that happens your adsense revenue could climb nicely. Plus you can pack some articles into an e-book or create a seminar that people will buy.

Using affiliate marketing - both being an affiliate for other writers and collecting affiliates for your products can also bring in the money.

As stated above it all depends and also depends on market and demand, I live in Arizona and dont see many jobs "right now" unless it is programming, I see jobs for godaddy however the rates, job expirence is poor and they expect you to pull the crap works out rather than focusing on a clients needs.

I have since started my own company and doing really well.
