What kind of jobs does a web designer expect to have. Do they do any coding? Or is it just all layout and creating graphics?

Well for one thing if your web design is really good you can work for yourself, which is what i would love to do.

I guess there are other jobs like being hired by companys to design there site.

Web Designers needs to know a bit of html coding/slicing psd's since he is responsible to create a website whereas graphic designers are just related to designs.!

Photoshop, php a little bit e.g. for custumization of Wordpress, Drupal etc

That depends. I work for a large company, we build web sites for our physicians, and we do it all, graphic design and all hand-coded.

I think a web designer responsibility includes basically coding of the site, Need to know how to work with design tools, like photoshop, dreamweaver and a little bit of programming skills.

In general, the term 'web developer' these days is more focused on the backend programming for applications - php, .Net, databases, etc.

Most web designers I know knows a lot not just through web design and flash animation but they also understand how to code a little. So I guess it is really a must for designers.

Designer is not completely in depth involved in coding but he must know HTML and bit of PHP and CSS because understanding of these things helps the designer to make good forms and understand its functionality

In my opinion, web designers should be proficient in designing(graphics, layout) and building the whole site. For me, basic coding is a must since you can easily build websites on a WYSIWYG editor.

This really all depends on where you want to go. I mean do you only want to work on the designs in photoshop and then slice them and give them to a coder to do?

Or do you want to take on the full project, make more money and not have to rely on anyone else.

Most, developers know designing and HTML/CSS at basic. That way they can do a full web site on their own and not have to worry about anything. Now, wheter or not you want to make dynamic pages you will need to learn more like PHP, mySQL, AJAX and stuff of this nature.

It really just depends on what you're good at. I think, as a designer, you should study HTML and CSS as a primary importance, so that you don't make poor design choices when making graphic mockups, Photoshop or otherwise. Even if you end up in a company where the task of coding the HTML and CSS is normally handed off to someone else who specializes in just that, the knowledge will be good for you to have.

Also, a person with well rounded skills has a more secure job than someone who works within a very narrow job definition. And if you ever want to go into business for yourself, a broad skillset is going to help, even if you can outsource portions of your workload.

The world changes and so has the jobs that many web designers use too have.

When I first started my education "2005" it seemed jobs only required the basics...

It seems that these days not only do you require the above you need the following..

XHTML

Basic Understanding of...

JavaScript
PHP

of course there will always be an exception, if you are the best with in 200 mile radius in graphics and can develop campaigns for Walmart "example" and just slice into valid XHTML websites, they will grab you up quick as someone else can always do the more advanced work.

It depends on the company and the role they are looking for.

One job i had i was a designer, all i did was produce concepts in photoshop which were approved, i had a developer work with me that created the code for the site and built the shopping carts etc, i didnt do any code.

Another job i have had i used to come up with several concepts, approval was given and i would build the sites with code which was then handed to a developer for the database building etc.

Overall though i would say knowledge of html and css is a must along with your usual skills of photoshop and design skills.

A web designer is expected to be knowledgeable in web layout design in PhotoShop, HTML codes, DreamWeaver or FrontPage. I think those are the basic skills of a web designer.

A web designer has a vast scope in the field of web designing. Particularly coding is not involved in it it but a designer must know about HTML and a little bit about web programming languages such as PHP because these things help out the designer a lot. Any way the designer's major concerns are with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and such other designing tools
