Heey guys

I never used png files.. until several days ago I checked them out.
They seem to rock for table backgrounds and shade effects.
My gif image was 2kb while my png image is only 200b. I have a bunch of those images so all together it helps reduce server load and loadtime.
Also the quality of the png images is a lot higher then gif or jpg. It seems to really rock.

But when I check out other websites I often see ones who use a lot of gif instead of png.
Is there any disadvantage when using png files???

Except offcourse that on larger images jpg and gif are a lot smaller..

hi there!

.png files work on 40bit colour compression, which is higher than most programs can actually handle, (for example PH7 is only 32bit at most) png's ARE great to a point, but some browsers wont display .png's. For print at the moment they are lousy, simply due to software limitations, but I use them in flash etc, and love them for the sharpness.

.png files are generally slightly larger than gif, but have far better colouration, (gif works or only 256 colours, with only 256 levels of intonation, where as .png works on millions of colours)

We just have to wait for software to catch up!

ie seems to support so in my eyes that's the only thing what really matters.
Firefox is supposed to be a proffesional browser so it probably supports.
The images are a lot sharper then gif and a lot smaller to.
Atleast when using very small pictures.

If you have a gradient color or something. Your picture dimensions would be 20*1 or something similar. png will give you perfect colors and uses about 200b in space. While gif will reduce color quality and take up ten times as much space 2kb.
Atleast that's what i noticed. How you feel about it?

I noticed that Fireworks saves its files in a PNG format. Does this mean that the "typical" PNG would be able to support as many layers as I have in Fireworks? Also, does anyone know if upcoming browser versions will adopt / support the PNG format?

PNG was actually developed as a better alternative to the lousy, 256-color GIF format. However, popular web browsers failed to implement PNG support fast enough, so web developers were wary of using them.
