I don't know about anyone else, but If someone tries to make me automatically download ANYTHING when I visit a site, I'm gone. Just make a pop-up stating they will need to VOLUNTARILY download the control and give them the link... don't force it. You will still have a hard time getting them to download. I wouldn't.

I have to agree with Roy, you should not be trying to FORCE anything on your visitors. Since ActiveX code is a PRIME infection mechanism for all kinds of nasty pc scourges, I do not and will not allow things like that to be loaded to my machine automatically. Like Roy, I will leave a site if they try it, or insist on it.

You would be better off, to a degree, explaining WHY that ocx file is necessary and give visitors a CHOICE to trust you - or not.

Microsoft has deprecated ActiveX controls. There isn't a reason you should ever be using them for any public site (at least not the downloadable ones, there are some available by default, like the ActiveX control used to make AJAX calls for IE6 and below).

No offense, checkmate, but I still think it sounds underhanded. Why not just give them an explanation stating that they will need to download such and such... click here to proceed. That sounds a lot more above board to me.

hey roy,

thats exactly what i will do. I will explain the reasons for the download and if they ok with it they can click on the link provided. If not they can happily leave the website? Would that not be enough?

I more than agree with Roy and Lady.

You pull that crap on me, I'm gone and never coming back.

Not only that I have my security settings and AV protection high enough that control alt delete will allow me to escape it no matter how confusing you make the confirmation box.

You want to kill your site, go ahead and do it.
