Can a freelancer/company recommend a good invoicing system or practice?

I initially designed a a4 template which I then use in Word to type out my invoices/quotes/receipts but I need something systematic.

You could always program one based on your credentials? Pending on how much you need this to do, but I don't think it'd be too hard.

Considering I just started, I haven't looked too much into this. But this thread looked like it needed some love. If you are considering any software right now, I'd be interested in hearing what you've found to compare the link I've posted.

Hey, thanks. This system is pretty good and has graphs, expenses, cash flow, petty cash, quotes, invoices .. pretty much everything I need for all types of clients.

I'll post back in a few weeks or months to give it an overall review as I've only done 5 invoices so far

I would checkout FreshBooks. Allows your customers ability to login and view /print out/pay invoices. Automatic notifications built-in. Monthly fee is minimal for what you get. It has a great community of forums and the company is growing so that means the application is well supported and will grow in functionality.

Have been using it for some time now as we needed an invoicing system that would integrate with our project management app, BaseCamp.

It looks good but the monthly rates is what puts me off.

Sometimes I don't take jobs on for weeks or even months due to employment contracts or other commitments.

I would prefer the one off payment option so that the costs aren't ongoing.
