A big move towards IE6's death. Basically Youtube isn't going to support IE6 anymore. Read more if you want...

Anyone else love hearing this?

This is like one of those "let's all not buy gas on this date" things. If EVERYONE did it at once, it would be great. Too bad there are still so many users to account for; businesses with cubicle after cubicle using some old computer, elderly folks using some "state of the art" computer they got from the Church rummage sale and so on.

I am battling it (sort of) by telling my clients there is a $75(or whatever) fee to have their site IE6 compatible. At least it covers me on my added time AND helps promote awareness of that browsers' issues a little. Though, sometimes I feel like increasing that fee to $300, ha!

I think if most of the giants start removing IE6 support, then most will have to follow, so all in all, this is great news!!!

Google now owns youtube. So this means google is not going to render IE 6 either. This is a big start and a huge statement to the world that is using IE 6. Granted they don't know wtf a browser is, but hopefully microsoft releases some updates forcing you to upgrade or die. I think you'll see it happening more and more.

This is true and scary. A friend of mine called me recently asking for advice about the internet, about how to remove his search history or something along those lines. I asked him, "what browser are you using?" His immediate response was, "what is a browser?"

And I just had someone tell me they haven't gotten their email for over several months because they bought a new computer after their old one broke. Not realizing, of course, those emails were not stored on their "old" computer, the emails could have been accesed any time.

Agreed, people really are not educated at all about this stuff and ther needs to be a way to get the word out I guess!

I believe we can get away with not supporting IE6. Most IE users have IE7 or IE8, which is much better, so we can get rid of it.

I wish. Stats still show IE6 at 30-40% and in the corporate environment it's much higher!

This can be changed. Call it an open source movement. All of us web developers could stop supporting it. They'd be forced to move from IE 6 educated or not. The cause of us web developers not supporting it would be the effect of Microsoft putting an end to IE6 by making an update mandatory. You know they could if they really wanted to or if they were forced to.

IE6 won't be around for too long, W3Schools website has a collection of browser statistics: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

Wouldn't suprise me if half of the stats found about IE6 are us designers checking our code in the crappy browser.

I have dropped IE6 support as standard but I will offer it for an extra charge. This trend has been set in motion for at least a year, possibly two, and with Youtube dropping support, it's really hit the nail on the head.

I think every designer should drop it.

I still support IE6 by default. Although most of the audience I generally work for is not in the corporate world, we find that it is still important enough of a factor to make the website function well in that browser. It may not be too long before it becomes an option, or an extra charge, or whatnot, but we haven't crossed that bridge just yet. After the recession, I predict that people will begin upgrading their computers in bulk, which will be very good for us as developers.

Oh the nightmares I had with doing all the stupid IE fixes. But hey, IE7+ aint that wonderfull asswell. And there are alot of people still using IE browsers. I check the stats of my site's weekly and see that there are still way more IE users. In my stats it's around 60-70%.

Good news is that Win7 won't be released with IE in Europe. Hopefully the computerstore's will get wise enough and install alternative browsers. And hopefully 'manufactures' such as Dell will wil not ship the IE CD/DVD wich M$ has anounced to release with their computers.

As for the whole 'what is a browser' thing. You can't blame people. They simply don't want to know everything about computers. They simply want to use them and that's it.

What I do is install Firefox on all the computers of my friends and relatives. And as for the site's I make I simply place a warning box which notifies visitors about IE. That's all I can do.

Corporates are the biggest offenders unfortunately.
IT infrastructure is controlled by the IT department.
The IT department usually has 10 other more pressing projects
on the go.
Plus the attitude is usually "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
As long as the security updates are getting done there
isnt really much value for money in upgrading to
better browsers.

But the pace of change seems to have stepped
up a notch over the last 9 months.
