Dreamweaver preview in browser doesn't work

Help, I can't preview any files in the browsers, just get error message that the temp file cannot be found on remote server, but when I look it seems to be there. Have I set up the Testing server incorrectly? It's driving me mad, not to mention the inconvenience - any suggestions gratefully received.

If I read your error message correctly Dreamweaver seems to think you want it to go to a remote server to look for the temporary file. Does this mean you are in an organization where everyone shares a testing server and no testing is done on a local PC?

Everything I have done with Dreamweaver involves testing locally, then uploading to a testing server and then finally publishing to the web server. If you are testing locally the temp file should actually be on your local PC. (In the root directory of the website you are working on).

Try this local setup (for Dreamweaver MX 2004) to see if it helps: Open Dreamweaver, select Site - then select Manage sites - Open your site - Select the Basic tab - on page titled 'Editing Files Part 3" click 'Edit Local Copies on my machine' then save your new site definition. Next select Edit - Preferences. Under Category select Preview in Browsers. Under Preview click the + sign and add each browser you want to use in Dreamweaver - then select which browser will be your Primary browser and which will be your Secondary Browser. Finally check the 'Preview using Temporary File' option and close the page.

To test that it works correctly you should be able to open a page in Dreamweaver and press the F12 key - - The page should display in your primary browser. Works whether the page is opened from local view or from remote view.

If that doesn't work I suggest you contact Dreamweaver support; however if your organization does not allow you to test locally you'll probably need to contact your company network people for assistance.

I recently had this problem, too. Your advice fixed my issue.

Here's what I did for those of you who have Dreamweaver CS4:
Go to 'Site' in the toolbar, and click on 'Manage Sites'.
Select the site you wish to edit, and click 'Edit'.
Select the 'Basic' tab, and follow the prompt by clicking 'next'.
In 'Editing Files, Part 2', select 'No, I do not want to use a server technology'.
In 'Editing Files, Part 3', select 'Edit local copies on my machine...' and make sure that the correct file location is listed in the box under "Where on your computer do you want to store your files?"
