Need ideas for site

I have been researching affiliate programs and have decided to make it a personal challenge to create a website and optimize my incoming traffic as much as possible. I plan to use Joomla as my CMS because it is extremely customizable and a lot of good premium templates are available for it.
My only problem is coming up with a theme.. a purpose. I want to make the website based around something that I enjoy, however am probably making it harder than it really should be.
I enjoy gaming and website development. These are the only topics I can think of...
Game Reviews - doesn't seem like me.
Clan Toplist - Clans with the most clicks in are highest ranked on a ranking board with their banner for recruitment purposes. This may become hard to manage for me...
Web Dev Tutorials - Video tutorials for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and different coding languages. May be overdone?
I would like to create my website in the market that has enough interested people to be a viable website for good traffic. Anyone else have any suggestions at all?

Well, thats kind of a hard one.... I do like the idea of the web dev tutorials, although there are so many out there. Even though I am an experienced web dev, still to this day I browse the web and watch tutorials and read etc etc, to see how other people do things vs how I was taught from a book. I think if you have the right content, good layout and the site is easy to navigate it could do well. Although, the other thing is just as I said, there are so many sites out there with this stuff. You would have to do something to stand out. Which I'm not sure what that is. Maybe possibly having a variety of tutorials, like PHP, ASP, Ajax, Java Script (from the beginning for someone with no experience). Just a thought. I kknow when I first started out, I had a hard time finding things like this. W3schools web site has a lot of information, but I find that sometimes it can be a little hard to navigate.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not completely sure what I'm going to do yet, and am still pondering on the idea before I invest a lot of time into it. I need to find something that I am interested in that enough people will be willing to visit.
I'll be sure to let you guys see the finished product

Okay guys this is what I have decided on... I plan on making a site on free ebooks. This may be overdone or it may not be. Here are the results I have from google.
search: free ebooks
results: 19,300,000
search: ebooks
results: 67,600,000
19 million is a lot of competition (i think) but with enough SEO, marketing, and directory submitting, I believe that I can get a good flow of people coming in.
I chose this because I enjoy reading "How-To" ebooks. Anything relating to web design, web hosting, coding languages...etc.
Here is where one of my questions comes into play... Should I make my niche just ebooks or should I narrow it down even more to "How-To" ebooks? For example...
General Ebook topics may include... sports, video gaming, humor, family, hobbies & crafts, pet related, how-to guides, fitness & exercise, dieting, business...etc (the list goes on and on)
OR should I narrow the niche a bit more and do the "How-To" ebooks only. These might include some of the topics mentioned above, but altogether all of the ebooks would be teaching the user who is downloading the book how to do something.
ALSO Yes/no.
Should I make my users register on my website before being able to download the ebooks? Many times I find myself coming to a website to download something and am either frustrated or do not feel like taking the time to register for one download. I don't want that to be the issue with my visitors, however I do want to get a decent user base so that I can advertise via email.
Maybe have books that they can download by not being registered, but also have a VIP section for registered users only?
ALSO (Last question I promise) I need an edge. Something that will make me stand out from any other website like mine. How would I be able to get YOU to come to my site for the books you wanted. What would make FREE even better?
Opinions please

Free ebooks!
But is it legal? You might want to check that aspect.

I was thinking about that too. I would have to have reseller rights to all of the books, or at least charge for the paid ones. I'm not sure how I would sell an ebook for money unless I actually wrote it. Does anyone know?
I'm sure that the free ebooks that other websites have are resealable. I could start there and compile the best ones from each of them maybe..

I dont know the legal specifics but ebooks generally is a good market
to devote your energies to.
Why?
3 Reasons:
1.The mobile web.
2. iPhone PDF support (not great at the moment but I'm sure it will get better)
3. Amazon Kindle DX (a big improvement on the previous versions in terms of PDF support).
Demand for ebooks is only going to increase.
Good luck!

Coming up with your own idea simply doesn't mean choosing something that already exists and then modifing it to make it 'Yours'...YOU need to do the work...Think of your own idea like this...You don't have a way to access this board, no interent, now how can you find us? Now create on that..There you have it. Hard isn't it?
No offense to anyone on this board, but no one truly has an idea on this board as of YET. And I read ALOT of messages. Maybe not thoroughly, but I still find their points very easily. It's either how can I accomplish this, or that, or how can I improve my google rank.
Not saying it's going to be a long road for you, but with only 9 posts on this board. There are some with thousands of posts, and they still have no clue...No offence, again.

I don't believe my post count has anything to do with the my capabilities to create a successful website. It may not be my own idea to make a free ebooks website, as there are many out there, but I do believe that I can offer something that other websites do not offer in order to make visitors want to come back. I'm not interested in being "the next big thing" (eg. facebook, myspace, google, amazon..etc), I just want to create a user friendly website that will allow visitors to get the information and service that they need without the hassle.
I'll have to research the legal aspect of this, but all in all I think that it could be a good idea.

If you're interested in selling others' e-books, check out the clickbank.com affiliate service. As far as legal aspects of managing a website, Shawn Casey has the best information on that in his Internet Law Compliance e-book available through http://InternetLawCompliance.lbdbookstore.com

This is true. Thinking long term I could possibly run into legal issues down the road. Maybe I should take the advice above and just become an engineer or think of a different idea for the website.
My next best ideas...
Buttbook. Like facebook, but well, you show your butt., How to be a ninja, and superpower training. All which are failproof.
But seriously, I need to find a topic and am having no luck

This should have been posted in another topic. However, I find myself repeating these questions to myself trying to figure out a topic for myself.
- What are you interested in?
- Are other people interested in the same things you are?
- Is there any topic that you could talk about all day and still not get bored?
- Is there anything you are interested in learning?
- What kind of things do you know a lot about?
- Do you have any special knowledge that others may want to know?
- Do you have professional experience in a particular career field that may be helpful to others?
- What do you do with most of your free time? Chances are other people do these things too.
- Do you have any hobbies such as collecting items or creating items?
- Do you participate in any kind of sports or events that you are passionate about?
