Look at websites and pick the items you want. Make sure, however to use standard fonts because not everyone has all the same fonts.

yes i second to this, you can check some top gaming forums sites, and observe the design, what style they use, how the layout is done..and with that you can have your own idea.
Personally i like the design of the Warcraft gaming forums templates..so cool.
There are bunch of free gaming templates out there, just google it and you can get lots of references.
