so i have somone who wants me to do a webstie for them. basically he wants to go out to clubs at night, take pictures, and upload it to his website for all to see.

a perfect example would be Toligado.Net want the gallery system to be where you add an event, and in that event there are several pics.

what would be a smart way to do a site sort of like this?

I'll almost always say Wordpress. They have calender plugins(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/) which would lead to dedicated pages for each event, there he could place galleries from a gallery plugin like nextgengallery(http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/) that he uploads photos into himself through the admin panel.

if you want to 'design" this site and not use a template at least for a starter, then you'll have to learn to theme in Wordpress which is fairly easy to learn even with little php knowledge.

Good luck!

If you are good enough with it, I would say that flash might even work well, though I would have to say, I usually have a strong dislike towards flash sites, this could be a good use, if you did it right. You could use an image slideshow that updates automatically based on the images. Or you could use flash and PHP to automatically updated comments and all that as well. For some samples and free downloads you can check out http://flashmo.com and look at their flash templates.

But also wordpress could be a good solution. It isn't hard to make a gallery theme. It would be much easier and quicker than flash, but if they want a flashy website like the one you show in the link, I would recommend flash.

Unless you know advanced PHP and knowledge on creating a dynamic webpage, I would suggest sticking around with a CMS or Wordpress.

If all you are looking at doing is adding photos and allowing comments on them. There are pre-made sites/applications that could deliver the solution rather well. For instance the ImageVue application for one.
