How can I add text to speech (TTS) to an HTML website? It is very important that the spoken word be highlighted, underlined, or made to stand out in some other way.

Thanks for your help.

ALL assistive devices understand HTML formatting tags such as bold, strong, emphasis etc and will/can emphasise or intonate the words contained within them.

Also there are the CSS media types, where "aural" is for use with screen readers & voice synthesisers

Chris, thank you but I dont think that will work for what I need. Im making a site for children and want to give them the option to have the text read to them. Thats why I want the spoken word to stand out.

Ive googled "talking website" and get a bunch of hits for avatars. These are too expensive and most want monthly payment. If you could point me towards something open source and/or free that would be awesome!

I dont mind buying the software or a human-like voice(very important) but I wont use anything that requires continuous payment.

Thanks for any help.

I could use the TTS software installed on my computer with an AT&T natural voice to make an audio file of the text. Thats very simple to do but that wont coordinate the audio with the text. If nothing else, I would use this option. Just looking for a "prettier" way of doing it.

You could do it with Flash, then you can co-ordinate the frames with the audio.
