I reccomend using proboards. ( http://www.proboards38.com ) It's free, easy, an has options that some other boards make you pay for. I love it!

phpBB has one of the clearest install instructions I've ever seen. Although I'd never setup a forum before, I had no trouble setting up phpBB...

I think you have to upload all of the files to a subdirectory in your domain (i.e. "forums/") and then go to www.yourdomain.com/phpbb_subdirectory/ with your browser.

Old 11-20-2004, 03:20 PM How about a PHP forum that does NOT require write permissions?

Since we are on the subject, I too am needing a good PHP forum for a client, unfortunately their hosting provider does NOT allow write permissions. Can someone recommend a PHP Forum script that can rise to this challenge?

Thanks.

I have to agree with Onur. PHPBB is free, and it is relatively easy to set up.

If you get lost, you can always visit their website (http://www.phpbb.com) and get further instructions. It's basically just a matter of downloading an archive, unzipping it, uploading everything, and opening the install file on your server.

"All .php, .inc, .sql, .cfg and .htm files should be uploaded in ASCII mode, while all graphics should be uploaded in BINARY mode."

they lost me here . i know alot of FTP lets you choose BT ASCII or BINARY mode but with DreamWeaver's FTP i haven't find any mode switchs !

Most FTP programs will automatically switch between the two. I haven't used DreamWeaver's FTP program, but it most likely does the same (I have never used an FTP program that didn't).

Pretty much, unless your README/instructions file states otherwise. After that, just run install.php or whatever the installer is called.
