design is based on the subject and the audience it is aimed at NOT the domain name.

Based on your idea, amazon.com should be a site about a large river,

Domain name is a brand image of domain. It shows domain identity. Hence, according to domain name you should choose choose site design & prepare the contents.

Yes you are right! its the brand what talks and not the name always, but name also has its role.

it does pretty much nothing at all

think about how you want to brand your site and that's how it should look

think about it... if I had www.so-delicious.com what would you think...

I can actually have this site about baking receipes - soft, fluffy with clean design

or I can have it as a lingerie site with hot half naked woman on pillows lying everywhere

or it could turn out to be a pr0n site...

point is, the domain name means nothing as it can imply many content meanings
