Is it possible to design professional pages on wordpress or just blogs? What are good themes that could do this?

you can do professional pages using wordpress but to do that you need to good is programming. You can use free template or purchase or you can make your own one. you can also modify free free templates the way you like. All the things depends on your expertise on Wordpress skills.

It depends on the theme you select. I think there are lots of 2 column professional theme available in wordpress.

Premium themes are best but of course they are not free.

Because WP is so popular there are plugins for nearly anything and ample online help. I'd buy some good premium themes since they have many "under the hood" enhancements and admin options, not just pretty design.

Yes it is definitely possible to design professional pages with Wordpress, just as it is with any other CMS.

WP can be used as a "back-end" management tool, meaning that you can make it look however you want on the front end, including professionally (through WP Themes). And you don't have to choose an already pre-made theme.

Just custom design a theme to however you want the template of the primary site design to look...

You can have you own professional design to use for your wordpress but you need to have a good web designer and programmer for that.

You may have come across sites that use Wordpress but dont have any of the outward signs of being a blog.

Wordpress is known world wide as a blogging platform, but its superior CMS which is easy for both designers and editors/users to understand and use.

You could either choose a theme or create your own custom theme.

WordPress rocks as a web development platform. Premium themes IMO are almost always superior to the free themes you can get. Even a lot of the premium themes are a bit buggy as far as the CSS.

The absolute best theme I've found for WP is Thesis <affiliate link removed> by DIYThemes.com. It looks great out of the box with no customizations. But it is easily customizable using hooks. Even the CSS can be customimized easily... a lot of it done through the UI in wp-admin. All customizations (php hook code AND CSS) are isolated to a "custom" folder making upgrades to the theme a breeze... Simply backup the custom folder, upgrade to the new version of Thesis, and restore your customizations. No recoding necessary to the new version to re-implement all of your customizations.

A LOT of SEO's and others in the industry use this theme because it is also SEO friendly. For example:

It's a quality theme. I think it's about $85 for a single copy or about $165 for a developer copy that lets you build unlimited sites of your own with it.

Or you can grab something like Thematic, Hybrid, or Carrington, which are all free theme frameworks that do pretty much what thesis does and are free.

i mainly use Frontpage but am currenty learning to use Dreamweather.
