Hello everyone

basically
i saved a webpage from a site thats already up on the internet

i did this because a friend of mine would like to see wether i could maintain his website for him instead of his web designer.

when i open the index.html in dreamweaver mx 2004 it loads up fine, but when i hover my mouse cursor over pretty much everything it shows a black circle with a line through it like a red no smoking symbol.

so i look around and see there is a template:main in a yellow box showing in the top right hand corner of the screen.

so i right click and scroll down to select templates but there arent any options which help.

so i look at properties panel at the very bottom of dreamweaver and press on PAGE PROPERTIES but then i get a little window in dreamweaver saying

ALL OF THIS PAGES PROPERTIES ARE LOCKED BY A TEMPLATE, SO YOU CANT EDIT THEM

ok so thats my situation...

how can i unlock the template?

is there a password i need to get from my friends web designer or what?

thank you all for your time and please help my sorry ***

Your best bet would be to download the entire site, including the template. That way you can edit the template itself and Dreamweaver will automatically make the change on all pages that use that template.

The other option would be to edit the source of the document, and take out all the comments that Dreamweaver uses for templates.

I doubt that you can download the the site templates because most web developers do not upload their templates to the site.

However, I think that you can download the page you are interested in and (using Dreamweaver) select Modify/Templates/Detach from Template - That should remove all the template code and make the page editable.

Yeah what JohnJ said was good, but why not open it up in notepad and make the CodeOutsideHTMLIsLocked=false to true or vice versa?

Just an idea,

Regards,

Sean

You stated that you were being given a chanc to see if you could maintain the site, so I would recommend getting copies of EVERY file, including the template. Then, simply change the template and update the site. This way, you now have a full copy of the site and can continue to update/maintain as you wanted. Your friend should have the ability to get you access.

Then, you should go out and LEARN Dreamweaver if you do plan on maintaining this site as is.

I know it is an old post, but I feel I must thank you because of this advice you gave.

I am a newbie, self taught, I want to create a site and I lost my sleep for the last 2 nights. The Dreamweaver template I downloaded had some locked properties.

Thanks to you I can continue my work on the site and I also regained tranquility.
