A question for all Web Designers

Hi guys,

I am currently developing a script that I hope to release as a plugin for wordpress and other open source content management systems. The script's purpose is to allow web designers to attach stylesheets and javascripts dynamically according to which browser the visitor is using. So if their site looks a little odd in Chrome for example, then they can attach a css or javascript hack just for that one browser. There will be some more features to the script as well but that is the main purpose.

Anyway, I would like to know which browsers to include support for, for that I need to know which one's gives designers/developers the most trouble. Not just the name but also the version (i.e. Internet Explorer 4). Many thanks in advance!

I hardly think there's a need to name and shame any particular browser, after all we all know the number of the beast shall be IE6

You might as well include as many as you can, though I'm not sure how useful the plugin would be. It's really not that hard to send different files to different browsers. In truth if you design to standards you're covered for just about every modern browser outside IE and there are so many ways to send content just to IE. Conditional comments are my preferred method.

Don't let my comment stop you though. I'm sure there are plenty of people who actually would find this useful. Myself no, but others maybe.

Is this so the webmaster can change the code or so the user can pick their browser?
I have had need for such a code on the webmaster side.

Its so that the webmaster can attach different styles/javascripts or show unique messages based on the visitor's browser. Pretty much what conditional tags do for IE except this script will work for the other browsers as well. I will finish it up within the next two weeks and will remember to post a download link on this thread in case anyone is interested.

If you're quoting someone to call them on dropping a link you might want to also think about taking the link our of the quote. It's been removed.

Safari has auto update - no reason to care about version 3.
And Opera fresh version is 10+. If you care about legacy, you can get Opera 9.27 or Opera 8, but tinkering with anything older that that is just useless waste of time
