Also, download Opera, and use the Dragonfly feature to look at how other people are building pages, nothing like a bit of real-world experience to get to grips with HTML & CSS.

I started with Microsoft Expression - a package whereby you have 10-12 templates and can COMPLETELY change then as you learn css and html. I taught myself web design from there.

Once you get more advanced, you can then call in scripts for rotating pictures etc (you don't need to write all this code yourself).
