Now I don't claim to be any kind of expert. But like you I could not figure out how to build a website, and I tried to use some free tools that were very highly recommended. The thing is I don't want to really be a designer. I want to be a marketer and let others do the design. But I have no budget for design. So I went and bought a very inexpensive do it yourself tool called Web Page Maker. It only cost $30 or $40 and it had a bunch of templates.
The URL for it is http://www.webpage-maker.com/. I have no interest in this company or its success.
Now I am sure it must have some serious drawbacks in some ways. Perhaps the really experienced designers here can provide some direction as to what to look out for. But if you can't afford to hire a professional, then this may be the way to go. It's worked for me, but I still have a lot to learn.
If you can afford someone with experience, then I highly recommend doing so. There are many technical issues that a really qualified developer can help you understand. For one of my companies, we found a very talented high school student who could help us. He had the knowledge and the tools to make a pretty good portal for us that carried us through a couple of years until we got some funding and could hire a professional design firm.
Good luck. I am looking forward to learning more about how this is going.
