I'm still somewhat confused about the exact process used to design a website. Allow me to explain...

The sites I've made I created right from Dreamweaver. I used one of its ready-made pages and took it from there...adjusting margins, padding, colors etc.

However, I know that most designers do not do it this way. They make a mock up in a program like Fireworks first.

My question is this...

What process do YOU use to take that Fireworks mock up and transport it to Dreamweaver? Are there any books that explain this well? I bought one book but it offered TOO MUCH information. I'm looking for a simple one page example...using slicing, exporting etc.

Thats pretty much how i do it.

I play with a design in fireworks the split it up.

However, I tend to do it the hard way, but manually splitting the images, then making my CSS and div layout with the images in.

Its an old and horrible way ( time consuming ) to do it.
but it works for me, So i cant complain.

Oh and if you dont have any money,
Try
Aptana & TheGimp instead of Dreamweaver & Fireworks etc

Even before you do a graphic mockup in Fireworks or PhotoShop you
should do a Wireframe first.

Especially if you are designing for a client (they tend to change their mind a lot
or don't really have a clue what they really need).

Are you suggesting that clients won't know what they want until they get it and then they realise that wasn't what they wanted in the first place???

Also lookup CSS Sprites for performance issues in addition to the above. A good way to reduce http requests if you have a lot of images.
