It can be a small square logo it doesn't have to be a banner. Most professional sites or business sites have at least some kind of logo even if just text

I think if you have a logo, use it. Branding is very important on the web. You want to associate everything you do with your logo, your ads, your website, your product, your advertising (online/offline).
