I am looking into having a banner created for a website I am working on for an online store (mine). I'm torn on whether or not I need a company logo incorporated into the banner. I am on a budget so I'm wondering if there is any drawback in not having one to start and just having a banner which displays my company name. Any thoughts?

I would go for the company name first only. There are plenty of online shops without their company logo and they don't seem that bad.

i would have to say it is not that important and you can always get a logo later

Thats the standard banner. And i think logo SHOULD be included. But its a personal taste ultimately.

Depends if you are working on building a brand. The logo is definitely important in establishing a brand.

That about sums it up. If you want to create a strong brand identity then your going to want to have a logo right from the start. So if you are going to be selling a lot of your own products, then a logo is a MUST! If you are going to be selling a lot of other people's products then it isn't as important. I would use that to make your final decision.

if your budget won't stretch to a logo then you really have to question how committed you are to a business venture. your logo sums up your whole image in one memorable image. without it you won't appear as professional or as trustworthy (what sort of business doesn't have a logo?!)
hold a competition on here for a logo- you can get a pretty good one in the region of 50-100 dollars.

what are you going to advertise with? a web banner certainly wouldn't be suited to flyers/small newspaper ads/ posters in local shops.
for me there's no question: you need a logo.

Go for the Logo included, it helps for quick recognition in the future

I think a logo should be included since it's something diferencing you, making your business unique from others. You want people to remember an image, and recognize it next time they see it. Don't just be a name lost into the others. Distinguish yourself from the others with a logo

I disagree. i think it is necessar: unless you want to be caught adrift in this ocean of information you need your 'skull and cross bones' or whatever 'flag' you have to be readily identified

It's not really necessary but a clever idea to do because it builds trust and aids as a brandbuilding element as well. The only exception are likely fake banners that are used to drive arbitrary traffic to your site. You're certainly not going to use a logo there as it spoils the effect. For other types of banners: do it.

I couldn't agree more, the logo is what really stands out.

Just think of it this way, whatever you put in the top left corner of your site will become your identity and will define your online presentation. In my opinion you have no choice but decide what it's going to be. If you just going to slap some text there it'll become your identity.

Recommend investing in professional logo/identity development.
