I am trying to add an additional side navigation to show more sub categories than i have going horizontal at the top on my wordpress website. I am pretty new to web design but i know my code pretty good, would i be able to add like an html or css code including separate image links as the navigation or is there something im not thinking of on how people do this?

You probably want to use wp_list_categories() with one or more of it's parameters.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think each theme has individual files from individual creators meaning each time you try to manipulate the theme is going to be a different scenario. I always start digging in the php files of the theme.. sometimes I will type 'asdfasdf' somewhere, save it, upload it, then refresh the page and it will show me 'asdfasdf' and I will think.. ok perfect putting my ads there.. or nope that isn't the right spot and hunt around some more.

Lol, Scott I like you. Are you sure you aren't in brain? I'm always doing the same thing. I'm like **** I can't stare at this code and figure what someone else did in their template. So much faster to just type some random stuff and see where it pops up.

As for the question at hand, like VanGogh said, you will probably need to use the wp_list_categories tag.

VanGogh is correct, but always keep in mind that just because you can't make a WP function work the way you want it to you can always just code the links.

Just visit the category archive page, copy the URL and create the link. Agreed this isn't taking advantage of the dynamic value of a CMS, but if you are going to use images for category links you may want more detailed control anyway.

@scottdizzle - agreed. Not only that but many write loooong functions to list pages, categories, etc.

I am so happy to never ever have to use a pre-made theme again! And, yes, I have used 'asdfasdf' before only to realize I had two different index.php templates open at the same time from different sites in notepad++!!

Quite a few are good. They tend not to be the freebies though even some freebies are coded well. Depends on the developer. There are a lot of junk themes out there though. I've customized some where it was easier to just start over from scratch.

Oops, I wasn't ripping on using pre-made themes, I am just saying it makes my life easier to know the theme top to bottom rather than re-learn a new one each time.

I totally agree to be weary of freebies, even paying $30 can mean the difference between a well coded theme and some table-based garbage.

Oh got'cha. Makes sense too. I try to use the same themes or frameworks since like you say familiarity with them makes your development life easier.

Isn't it amazing how much of a difference there can be between some paid themes and some freebies?
