I use to be in the SMS industry myself many years ago, and in around 2001 three was a number of free sms services out there you could even use there gateways if located in UK, as it gained popular and also became abused alot telecoms could not afford to provide this service anymore for free, so 99% of sms providers will have to charge for their services as there is to much abuse and cost involved in running this service nowadays.
Pricing is usually around the same as your mobile phone network bulking buying can bring it down to around 3p a message, thats around the lowest ive found.
