960px seems to be the standard-issue width at the present.

I think 1080px will be best for any site.Though its tough to create as it will take a long time to load but 1080px is best in quality.

980 to 998px is the width to use for a 1024 target resolution

i go 950ish normally 960
you have to remember that not everyone is sitting at a desktop with a super high-res screen and as we all know nobody likes scrolling horizontally.
if you have access to more than one computer make a super basic site and try it in different widths with different resolutions and screen sizes

960 px is more my standard width now. I'm afraid to go any more than 1000px simply because there are so many netbooks, small laptops, and smaller screens out there.

I click away immediately from a site where I have to horizontally scroll, so I don't design them that way.

most of the people use their monitors at 1024 width of resolution so It is recommended by most of the professional developers to make your page at less than 1000px resolution. i always use 950 to 975...

What do you want us to tell? The question was:

I'll my references said 960px. But lets face it: depends the content. If you have little content then.. in a wide wrapper is hard to organize things

I agree with Johnny.dacu above. If I am designing for a fixed website, I use 980px all the time. But a lot depends on the content your are trying to display and where it will be displayed. I just started to experiment with fluid displays as well as using css that adjusts automatically to the screen size. Even with these, however, I use 980px as the base of which the pages will typically be viewed.

Not to mention the fact that a lot of businesses haven't upgraded their computers in the past 10 years.

If you aren't designing a website with a fluid design then you should definitively use a width that will fit nicely for most if not all users.

Personally I use 960 pixels for my websites. This allows it to be seen on screens with a 1024 resolution width. I know a lot of people have wide-screen monitors specially on laptops but 1024 is still very commonly used, particularly by netbooks.

Owning a netbook myself I know how annoying it is to visit a website that has to make me scroll horizontally!

Anyways here's a good website to keep handy:
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

There you can retrieve stats for browsers, and resolution size, among other stuff.

Its totally depands upon your monitor. Here some standard website width with resolution Old monitors was 800x600. But, now a days 90% of the monitors was 1024x76.

Wrong!

It "totally depends" on the website USER demographic monitor size/resolution.

Keep in mind, if you ever plan to use a CSS framework like http://960.gs/ for example, most are based on 960 pixels width.
