Yeah, most computers support the width, but that doesn't mean everyone is using it. I just talked to a client yesterday who had their computer set to 800x600 because they didn't know they could change it.

It's incredible how common that is.

I have had clients, generally larger companies, that are still using IE6, XP, and 800x600....

I had been there..it's pretty shocking and we can't do any but follow.
Yeah, for us workers..better to keep it standard, not appraises newly invented internet technologies too much and blabber about it, to the customers especially. It's like straight-face walk then slipped by banana peel.

Look at this line from yahoo.com's CSS document:

Can't say I've ever seen that before. So the idea is if you change your font default size in your browser, the whole site gets wider. On my monitor (with default font sizes) the whole site behaves as if it is fixed width.

I developed a personal site for my TV (lan) and it's much bigger than that. I don't think it would be good to do that yet (for a website)...Maybe by 2015 or so.

I design all websites 1000px unless advised to do so differently.
Even people with those ugly little monitors it does not look too bad, if it does then too bad, upgrade your dam monitor I say.

yeah, not yet. There are still LOTS of office buildings that are stuck on 1024 and will be for a while yet

that's pretty interesting. what if you want bigger fonts but have a resolution of 1024? The page expands off the screen?

I suppose you could use js to detect resolution or window width and assign a corresponding max-width to keep that from happening

I've been doing this since the mid 90's, not much has changed (in that area anyway). Once in a while I force myself to go as wide as ...... 950!!

for 2 collum I usualy do 800, for 3 collum i do 1000 but a while ago I made a 1150 for an image gallery website
