How much experience do you have with it to this point?
For a beginner, there are some stickies right here in this forum that I would think are an absolute must read. Some are opinionated, but it helps to get multiple opinions, because with websites, you're going to get customers that have varying opinions. It's just up to you to comply to standards and not do anything completely hideous.
If you learn the basics, you'll improve over time. I look back at some of the sites I did in the beginning...some of them make me want to cringe, but the customer still loved them.
I started by reading a lot of google articles, spending about $100 in books at Barnes and Noble, I was already in an IT degree situation, so I added a couple of web design classes to my curriculum, and I just DID them. I refused to do any site in the beginning that was not from scratch. This way, I learned what to do and what not to do. I learned how it all worked, and I figured out what didn't.
Is my way the only way? Not in the least....but that's what I did, and at least for me, it worked.
And..by the way...you never stop learning. People who think they know it all and stop learning are still designing sites with tables.

It is definitely possible to learn online through many resources available at Google.
However, I do agree that you will never stop learning.
Keep up with the best practices to come out on top!

Do the Internet a favour and teach yourself the basics of graphic design as well. Many noobs to the web design arena skip straight to the technical side of making websites. Learn the basic principles of designing graphics as well as the technical aspects of making your graphics suitable for web sites.
Sitepoint has a good pdf book on the subject - Sexy Web Design and The Principles of Beautiful Web Design. Both have sample chapters that you can download.

Hello..........
I was thinking about learning how to do web designing through books, dvds or software. Does anyone know how could do this and how long it will take. The reason why I want to learn this is because I want to invest in domain names.
Try using Microsoft Web Developer 2008 for the design and programming aspect. You can try to go to your neighborhood bookstore to find a book on how to use this program. This express edition is a free and powerful program straight from Microsoft. I have found it to be very useful. Good Luck!

Books, courses, online tutorials and hard work. But if you put the time in you can learn.

NO. Frontpage and Dreamweaver is NOT web designing...it's drag and drop lazyness.

My honest opinion, download wordpress or joomla then buy a template from RocketTheme or YooTheme - start with that but DO NOT depend on templates.
Learn how to create website layouts using Photoshop and learn how to chop them up for use on the web.
DEFINITELY learn how to code using CSS and avoid tables whenever possible.
Templates are great but since almost anyone can use a template, you will only limit yourself when someone decides they want something custom.
We use Joomla! CMS for building websites but we RARELY use pre-built templates. My suggestion to use a template is so you have a website up and running while you learn to code a website from scratch which can take some time.
Seriously - learn CSS and xHTML FIRST. Period!

here here!
I would start with the very basics of HTML and CSS. You're no webdesigner unless you can code from scratch.
