Mobile Browser Detection?

Hey all,
I'm redesigning my robotics team's website (as I do every year), and was looking to add a mobile version. I played with this idea last year, but never really had time to implement it well.
This year I'm better prepared. I plan on having a mobile version of the site that automatically detects mobile browsers (server-side via PHP), but allows the user to switch to the regular. It's not the switching portion of this concept that I'm needing help with, it's the actual detection.

Any recommendations for this?

Thanks.
