If someone didn't want to use vBulletin there are plenty of alternatives, so to say there aren't any competitors would suggest you haven't researched very much

Out of curiosity what reasons did you find for people "hating" vB?

Is very difficult market, vBulletin works perfectly for my customers. And if people don't like it, as blue-dreamer says, there is plenty of alternatives. Even the wordpress team has forum software.

vBulletin has some issues, however I believe it is the best forum software, even with it's problems and being bloated and all the other things critics tell. Usually critics only include hard core programmers that knows their way for good coding, free riders and similar. I haven't heard from people who actually run big boards, any criticism that would make them change the software.

I don't mean to sound brute, but if you think about it it makes sense. People aren't going to use a forum software that has broken English all around it.

Actually it has a lot to do with it. Using poor grammar and broken English on what is a primarily English/American speaking/writing community shows that you may have failed to research the language fully or correctly. This then casts doubt or uncertainty over whether you have understood correctly your research, if it indeed included other English speaking communities.

What would you think if I posted a similar question in your native language that contained glaring errors in grammar and spelling?
Now for general conversation/communication a few mistakes in a foreign language is understandable and does not necessarily detract from the message, but in technical situations it is important that there is no mis-understanding or mis-communication otherwise it can throw a shadow of doubt over your competency.

vbulletin is the best out there,
Not necessarily, however it IS THE MOST popular of the paid, licenced forum scripts with does suggest that it is not exactly "hated" by users/operators if they are willing to part with money for it.

vBulletin has a crap templating system, poor overall code architecture, and is extremely bloated... but it's the most feature-rich forum on the market right now.

Want to beat it? Build something OS and extensible, like the Drupal or Joomla of forums... and try to get your name atop the other 100 free competitors out there...
