You have to consider what amount of possible viewers you might lose.....
Sometimes it is not worth the extra effort....
If everyone that uses IE6 goes to you site....what are the odds?

What he said, that revolves entirely around your target market. These days, though, so long as it functions in IE6, it doesn't have to be pretty.

^ well said!

So long as the missing transparency doesn't interfere with visitors actually using the site and completing their tasks then it matters not.

If it's .png transparency in IE that's the issue, just use this fix:

or depending on the graphic use an 8-bit png with alpha tranparency and then you get an ok graphic in IE that is essentially an 8-bit png with one level of transparency.

I really try to be backwardly compatible, but IE 6 is just really awkard. I would make a simplified stylesheet for IE 6 for limited compatibility.

It's really simple - stop supporting that crappy browser! Upgrades to newer versions are FREE. Display the basic content of your site, in as nice a way possible, but dispense with all the eye candy and add a reminder to users that they are using a 10 year old, unsecure, browser and it's time to upgrade - with a link to where they can download IE7 or 8!

The sooner we stop supporting this piece of junk browser, the faster it will be buried once and for all!

How many people still actually use IE6? Think about how many people you could lose. Check your server logs to see how many people use IE6 and base your decision on that.

According to Global Webstats IE6 is still used by 5.78% of visitors. I suspect that they will tend to be older persons - that may influence your decision.

At the very least, if IE6 is detected, you ought to explain(politely!) to the user that IE6 is not supported, and suggest they change to a more-up-to-date browser.

Just as a side note - seeing that the question has generally been answered - my old computer has IE6 as that is the HIGHEST IE it will support. We had to uninstall IE7 because if it was accidently opened, it would freeze the computer completely! However we have swapped to Google Chrome.

You could always just put a "best viewd in _____" somewhere at the bottom of the page for those few people who notice it =p

Do it as best you can and see if you can find any followups on your issue because you will alienate alot of user if you forget about a browser still in heavy use. Point blank how would you feel if you could not see the site you want to go to. When people are savvy they will have 2 or more browsers but until then....

IE6 still has a foothold on corporate computer networks. Some people I work with take care of and build a network of media sites that sell training videos to mostly a corporate audience. Out of approximately 100,000 monthly visitors, 25% of them are using IE6. Not supporting IE6 for the sites would be crazy. So yeah, it depends on your audience.

For Western Europe and the US, the average is less than 5% usage, so it's entirely possible to stop supporting it or give a warning for many many sites.
