Color is VERY important in graphic design. Don't just choose your favourite colour. The colours your choose should depend entirely on the project at hand.

Each colour has an effect on the person viewing the web page. A blue, for example, is both calming and intellectually stimulating, but it's also emotionally cold. This is why blue is such a common colour in business.

Let the project choose the colour, not your personal taste.

I love this statement, its getting printed out and stuck on the wall.

Back on topic, seems white is in at the minute, white and clean lines.

Yes, rightly pointed by Ed.

Color or color combinations is one of the very IMPORTANT aspect of website design (infact, for any design).

You need to be careful while choosing shades of color for the background, for your graphics. You'll also need to be careful while choosing color for the content. Choose a contrasting color for your content so that easily readable on a color background.
Choose colors suits the website or company caters to a industry, for e.g. shades of blue with white goes well with corporations, however for a solar panel company you might use shades of blue/green/yellow.

However, there is not a single color which can be given honor for the best color for websites.

I always start with the client's logo. It has a strong influence on the color palate that will be used in the design

That depends on what your site is about, i have went to sites that has had bad colors but they have good content and i would stay and read their content, but the colors would irritate me.

Go to sites that are similar to yours and see what they are doing and get some ideas of what those sites are doing.

Mostly avoid the black background. Choose a text color that contrasts with your background.

I would recommend using something like Adobe Kuler http://kuler.adobe.com/ or colour lovers http://www.colourlovers.com/, they really help you pick complimentary colour themes.

Hi

When I choose the colours for my web sites I tend to use the Kuler plug in for Photoshop. There is a online version here:

http://kuler.adobe.com/

This allows you, from a base starting colour, to pick mathematical alternative colours based on colour theory.

Not sure what peoples thoughts on this are, but if a client has a logo they wish to use I would base the colour scheme of the design similar to the logo or what contrasts well, whereas if I create the logo myself it gives you more license.

Ultimately it has to contrast well and for example not have light blue text on a yellow background (may seem obvious but I've saw a few websites where I am squinting hard!)

I think background should be in white color. As we very popular websites like Yahoo and Google, they have very simple web design on white background. So it’s seems very professional and it’s easy to use to web site visitors. In background black or blue fonts are best to use.
