Hey guys,

Just a quick background on myself -- I've been using Photoshop for some time now, doing little things here and there for about 5-6 years now, 1 of which was spent in college. I'm by no means an expert, but I think I have a good enough sense of how to build an aesthetically pleasing web design template with enough practice. I'm currently unemployed and have a lot of time to delve into some serious Web Design and I had a couple questions for everyone.

How lucrative would selling Web Design templates online be? Is it too much of a saturated market? I'm not really looking to freelance professionally right off the bat, but simply to design templates and sell the PSD's off to whoever needs them to make a couple bucks.

Also, I'm no coder, so I'd end up selling uncoded templates unless that was frowned upon in the community. If it was absolutely necessary to code your own designs, then I would probably end up doing that, but if I can avoid doing that I would really prefer to do just the front end design type stuff. Is this practical?

Any advice would be great. Thanks guys

You can sell Website templates at good price and the market is wide open for it. But you cant just sell design, Coding is very much important too. People will pay only for both, I mean, website template with design and code.

We could probably help you with coding, if you are interested, please PM me.

Thanks for your input, Sarah. From what I've seen on Talkfreelance, some folks have been selling just their PSD's and on Theme Forest that's an option too, but I've also noticed at a glance that more people are selling their designs coded. I guess I could give it a try.

Photoshop has become a very popular tool and there are so many people that either already know how to design or know enough to learn how to design a website with it. There are much less people that know how turn that design into a web template and even less people that know how to code it themselves completely.

Trying to sell only psd's will mean that your only targeting those that can turn it into a website. Most people who can do this succesfully also know how to design. The idea of selling premade coded templates appeals to a MUCH larger market of buyers who have an idea or product they want online but have no experience. With web design or developement.

This makes a lot of sense. Usually the idea of having a coder and a designer all-in-one would seem a bit odd to me, but I guess in this case since CSS and HTML aren't too hard to learn, rather it just takes some time and practice, they would go hand-in-hand.

Thanks again for your input.

You can obviously sell PSD's if you can get the clients who are interested in buying only PSD designs. But chances for that is very less. So, you can go ahead and learn coding or outsource it. So, that your website templates will be of much need.

Hm I don't think there's much of a market for PSD web templates to be honest. The design is the easy bit, it's the coding that takes the time and effort.

Templates is a very saturated market, but that doesn't mean you couldn't make money selling nicely made templates, just don't expect too much for them, they're pretty cheap these days.

Yeah I kind of had a feeling about that. I think I'll take up HTML/CSS for coding my own.
