I want to be able to give some clients a vary basic CMS where they can add/edit/delete text etc.

I was thinking of trying CKEditor (http://ckeditor.com/).

Can anyone explain the license to me?

Am I allowed use it free on client sites?

ck editor is open source. You can implement it anywhere even open source and commercial cms.
