Taking facebook as the prime example of a totally rubbish site, let me just enlighten you (so some of you can start making decent sites instead of this junk).

I was uploading a big video to a server and went to my browser to facebooksurf and obviously, as facebook is SUCH a heavy footprint producing site, which requires so many things to be set into action each time you see a page, it just won't bother loading very fast, and if I were to post or comment, and many other functions, it would sit and take a good minute or so to do anything.

THAT is a rubbish site. So I typed the letter w, and instantly webmaster-talk (a far superior name to arrogant-talk or whatever it's called now) flashed across the top of chrome, in a single keyclick I was here, and here I am interacting, using and gaining from the website with no difficulty because its design takes into account the golden rule - thou shalt not steal the user's time.

Google has taken a step backwards with their livesearch function, in this regard, but at the same time if you happen to be on a good machine with no other processing overheads livesearch is definitely smooth and nice to use and a step up from ordinary searching.

And facebook is a mainstream site which isn't even overloaded with substandard spam advertising popups, embeds, and so on. There are a lot of sites slower. In fact most times I ever hit such sites I return to google to see if I can find an alternative with the same info.

Facebook is remarkably fast for me, and it's really an amazing feat considering that it must be bashed around more than google with server queries and requests.

I'm not a fan of google instant, however you can turn that off, and google is always experimenting and inventing new stuff, and part of that is to lauch exprimental features and gauge user reponses.

bashed around more than google... is not really relevant. When google sends information to you, they ensure that it is not wrapped up in tonnes of heavy memory consuming rubbish. Most "user friendliness" on facebook is produced by absurdly (unprofessionally) complicated processes which are all just sucking it out of your computer.

But the traffic between google and facebook - the difference... the number of requests per second... I'm sure must be the difference between a flea and an aeroplane, with facebook as the flea.

One thing facebook does to artificially boost their traffic figures, blatantly, is have a page which is refreshing and reloading literally every minute you're there. It fires out as many pages at you in an hour's stay as it can, and thereby fraudulently makes its usage look more than it really is. But the real clincher is that google provides information of real use to people thus it is engineered with a mindset of providing utility. Facebook makes money off how much time people waste on it so it is built with a mindset of wasting time, money, resources, etc.

I'd wager I'm a lot older than you are!!

What I meant as 'your opinion' is the sites you are deriding are 'rubbish' - THAT is your opinion.

It is my opinion that rubbish <=> not profitable, so what you say is true, yes. And it is a fact that what those sites do is not profitable in contrast with sites which don't do it (eg this one), for the reasons stated! (eg when facebook lost a fair dose of ad exposure and site usage etc to 'tycoon talk' because the latter's site could be browsed by me while doing my work and facebook's could not. In fact now I am already a member of 3 forums {this is the only techie one} on matters I like, all of which use simple fast software like this, and unlike facebook, which I find a pain in the arse because of its slowness. Finally something gave and I just stopped letting it waste my time. I can surf this forum and several others and still get loads of work done simultaneously. With facebook the slowness and heaviness of the whole system just drags your desktop away from being able to juggle bunches of other things in the background and often the foreground.

As recession continues across the industrialized world the recent years of luxury wastable bandwidth we've had will become a fond memory and efficient use of technology will become more important in terms of survival of companies and other institutions providing information, in MY OPINION.

I would assert that your use of the word "wager" makes it likely you are, as you say, a lot older than me, but then again that word was reborn in the 80s and early 90s in "The Simpsons", usually via the pirate character.

My favourite lines in the Simpsons were the one about stepping back from the brink of insanity, and Mr Burns' best ever line: "Since the beginning of time man has yearned to destroy the sun. I will do the next best thing...block it out!"

My age is definitely correct on my profile, so you know better than I if I am 400 years older than you. Maybe I am in spirit though. Maybe you have a young and spritely way, and I am an old man with a stick barking nasty egomaniac things at everyone so they stop slacking off.

For example...
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/javasc...t-do-spam.html

That's exactly what facebook's heavily overloaded way of doing everything opens up, in my opinion, and the opinion of the reality of the person there on that thread who got hacked or almost did, because of how rubbish facebook is!

All I can say is -- if you hate Facebook so much - DON'T USE IT!!! Simple solution. It's not going away any time soon, so there's no point in railing against it

Then What about the other websites with social media tags like stumbleupon.com, digg.com etc or the other competitor like orkut.com
