Is it still 800x600 or has it moved up to 1024x768 or something else yet? Do you know of a place that has this information?

Thanks.

Firstly, I'd say it's 1024x768. Secondly, I'd say it shouldn't matter cos you shouldn't design a site for any one particular resolution...

As for places you can find this info:
1. Our very own screen res poll: http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=8210
2. w3schools data from a more wider audience: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
3. Google

Kind of a loaded question IMO. I would say it depends on your target market. Even w3 schools states that most users still only have 800x600 screen displays.

Most webmaster, designer, and from my experience, art websites are using a higher resolution. As gamers and the like are using even higher still. But it is the average Joe/Jane that probably doesn't even know how to change their res and will use the res that was installed with their computer when they bought it.

My stats still tell me that more than 1/2 of my visitors are using 800x600, but an increasing number of visits are using higher. Then again, my stats are showing 84% are still using IE with a 4% unknown...

You may want to clear your browser cache.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

I reccomend anyone looking at screen res or any other statistics have a read of that page. They raise some good points, like the fact that you relly shouldn't rely on statistics...

Sorry, I was going by this statement "and most users are using a display with 800x600 pixels or more, with a color depth of at least 65K colors." which was within the browser trends stats.

But I agree with not relying on trends alone, hence my statement of checking with your own target market.

It is 800x600 but that doesn't mean you make your pages 800 wide. You still have to account for the frame borders and the possible scroll-bar.

I make my pages 780 pixels wide fixed width. I like fixed width because you have a lot more control on how the page is formatted.

I figure if it's good enough for CNN it's good enough for me. Look at their formatting, now that's packed but it looks good.

I've never actually had an 800x600 size display, it's a Mac thing I believe but even if a person has less they've gotten used to scolling to 800.

Up until about a month ago I used a 9 year old monitor that was top quality when I baught it, the biggest resolution it could handel was 800x600, now I purchased a flatscreen video-gaming moniter for $400 and it works best on a 1280x1024 and is what I use.

No it's not.

In fact, I would go so far as to say there is no 'de-facto' resolution. There are only statistical trends. And that all depends on what statistics you're looking at...

There's too much varience to really give an answer. Going by the w3schools stats, 53% at 1024x768, 29% at 800x600. If you design for either one of these resolutions, you're cutting out a huge number. If it was something like 99.5% at 1025.768 and 0.5% other, then it may be a feasablke option. I only have one thing left to say:

Liquid design isn't hard!

There is no "de-facto" resolution.

Furthermore, just because a monitor resolution is set to 1024 or higher, does not mean that the browser window is maximized.

I, for one, hate sites designed strictly for 1024 or higher. My screen resolution is set to 1024 on my laptop (because that's as high as it will go), and 1280+ on desktop machines. The reason my resolutions are high is because I like the extra canvas for working. My browsers stay at a fixed 800x600. My color depth is also set to 16-bit because it uses less resources.

Most stats listings (like the w3c listing) shows numbers for screen resolution. This is not the same as browser window size. And in the case of the w3c stats, most those are coming from their own http log files. Meaning, most of the people visiting their sites are web developers. Unless your website is a web developer/designer specific site, I hardly doubt these stats will apply.

Also, by default, IE is not maximized when first loading and running windows. Many users (and I know, because I work at an ISP and get calls from these people all day long) do not even know how to maximize their browser windows. They use programs as they are presented to them in their defaults.

It is borderline asinine to assume that 1024 is the "de-facto" width for web layout just because http stats show the screen resulotion to be 1024 or higher.
