The website i designed has a long url as i set it up about 3/4 folders deep. Now i know this was a mistake but id like to change it to make it much shorter and reduce the amount of /foldername that are there.

I designed it all in Dreamweaver - is there an easy way of reducing the length without affecting all the links that are currently in place and having to go manually through everypage and altering these??

Thanks

How are your links formated? Are they for instance - "About.htm" or do you have them set up with the full url?

Provided your folders are well named and structured you might not need to change. The main reason to use short URLs is useability. If the majority of your URLs are going to be linked to and not typed by hand, there may be advantages to having lots of subfolders - more keywords for Google to pick up (provided they're named appropriately..) You can always put in a redirect script so you can make some short URLS that point to commonly used long URLs.

Tim Burners-Lee wrote a good doc on how URLs should be well formed... (Coming straight from the horses mouth, eh?!) but I can't find it...

Firstly you don't need to write index.htm because it seems to be set up as a default document on your server.
Secondly, on going to the root domain URL (http://www.wickersley.net/) you have a very quintesstial flash entry page. I'd strongly advise you to drop that... (Goole doesn't like them, 99% of users don't like them...)
You then have 3 subfolders:
Web_Designs/dreamweaver/TestSite1/
You should just be able to move the contents of the TestSite1 folder up 3 levels to the web root folder.

To change your links in Dreamweaver you can either rename them manually in the DW assets panel on the right and Dreamweaver will ask you if you want to update your links, OR, to be more thorough go to the Change Links State Wide dialog box under the "Site" link at the top of DW and choose the current link and then type the link that you want to appear and DW will update all the links.

Hope that helps,

Kaiman
