Adobe and Macromedia both announced today the acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe:
Do you think this will be a good thing or a bad thing??

its not a bad thing..

its too early to comment on if its bad or good..

it all depends on what they are gonna do to the actual softwares themselves and then only we can come to a conclusion if its bad or not..

till then, i am ok with this deal..

ps: as long as dreamweaver continues to exist i am ok.

I fear the lack of competition will result in what we saw with Microsoft not updating Internet Explorer for six years.

Also... if the next generation of their products does not have the functionality we need, it will be years before a competitor is able to develop something that does (Again, as in the case of FireFox and IE).

I say bad ... based on the likelihood that Fireworks and Freehand will be laid to rest. I haven't done much with Freehand yet but I really got comfortable with my knowledge of Fireworks and would hate to have to eventually convert to using Photoshop, with little to no viable options for web graphics.

There may be some advantages to offset this one little issue, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah i'm a fireworks user and love the simplisty of it compared to the beast that is photshop. I'm sure that they wont drop foreworks but that might try and add some exra features which may or may not suck. I dunno I guess we'll just have toowait and see. Maybe nothing will change...

We'll probably see the price of Macromedia products rise another hundred bucks or so...

Whoa crazy news,

I am don't know how I feel about this. Both are excellent companies in there own separate ways. I agree with the posts above I'd hate to see Fireworks laid to rest because I prefer it greatly over ImageReady particularly because it doesn't throw all that useless code into your pages when you slice something up.

For Adobe this acquistion makes sense as far as Flash is concerned because they have been trying to develop their own SVG plugin for several years and now they own their main competitor, Macromedia's Flash, still with CSS3 and the hope of being able to imbed SVG animations right into the page without a plugin Flash is going to have some competition no matter who owns it.

ppedersen makes some good points, is Adobe the next Microsoft of the design world? This is like Coke buying Pepsi.

I would really hate to see Adobe ditch Dreamweaver as it is far superior to GoLive! (or any other WYSIWYG editor in my opinion). I feel like Adobes products are great from a designers perspective, but if you want a more technical website editor then Dreamweavers the one. Hopefully they will keep it the way it is and not make it into another one of their bloated design products. Guess we will have to wait and see...

both companies have FANTASTIC productss like Flash, Dreamweaver and fireworks and Photoshop/Imageready to name a few. I dont think i like this merge as if it fails then the products that i love will be gone. There is a possibility that Adobe may not keep Fireworks or several other macromedia products which would be a shame to lose.

I doubt their prices will go up that much. Not like they'll double or anything. They'll pick a price dependant on a lot of things - not just haow many merged companies are working on it!
