Hi, everybody!
I happened to abandon programming about 10 years ago. Now I decided to come back. The last projects I did were done on C and Pascal. Never learned anything after that.
Well, I am seeking an advice: what is the fastest way for me to become a Web Designer? What should I learn? May be you know good books to start with? Any advice is appreciated.
Wanna join the team of creators of the new universe!

All you really need to know is HTML. This can be learned easily from books (don't have any recommendations at the moment, though), or from online tutorials:
http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/html-basics/
is a start.

The key to being a good web designer, though, is graphics. Spend a lot of time working with PhotoShop and/or Fireworks and read a lot of tutorials on the web to get you started. Once you can create websites in these programs, its simple enough to 'slice' them and set them up as a website.

Practically anyone can create a web page in HTML, but it is the people who do good graphics, who really make the best websites.

Just a sidenote:
As a programmer you might want to look at some server-side scripting languages, such as PHP. PHP, Perl and ASP developers are in great demand and there are far fewer of them than there are web designers.

Thanks a lot, David!
That will keep me busy for a while.
Just one more question. I am aming at creating commercial sites in future. That would mean dealing with credit cards and stuff like that. Is there anything additional I need to learn about it or it is covered in those subjects you mentioned?

I would look into PHP for sure. Lots of help available on the Internet and tons of free code to start with.

Thanks, Chris. I am already into HTML. Looking at JavaScripts as well. The next step will be PHP.
