Hi folks,
I'm sure many of us have wondered about this - how much point is there these days in restricting ourselves to the 216 alleged web-safe colours? Statistics from W3Schools suggest that 3% of web users still have lower-than-16-bit colour displays - more than I would have expected, and not an insignificant proportion, albeit a small one.
How bad are things for these users if we use 'web-unsafe' colours, anyway? Will the dithering that might result cause real problems in many cases? What about people browsing the web by other means, such as hand-held devices? Should we expect to see more and more people using 256-colour displays again, or will these all have high-colour displays before long anyway?
What do you all think? I've been doing some research on this, but it's always nice to have search-engine-directed findings backed up by the experiences and opinions of interested people...
Cheers!
- Oolong
