Hi folks,

I'm sure many of us have wondered about this - how much point is there these days in restricting ourselves to the 216 alleged web-safe colours? Statistics from W3Schools suggest that 3% of web users still have lower-than-16-bit colour displays - more than I would have expected, and not an insignificant proportion, albeit a small one.

How bad are things for these users if we use 'web-unsafe' colours, anyway? Will the dithering that might result cause real problems in many cases? What about people browsing the web by other means, such as hand-held devices? Should we expect to see more and more people using 256-colour displays again, or will these all have high-colour displays before long anyway?

What do you all think? I've been doing some research on this, but it's always nice to have search-engine-directed findings backed up by the experiences and opinions of interested people...

Cheers!

Simply check that information providing is not possibly disabled if there is dithering in one form or another : information near one grom another should have sufficient contrast, and color disabling should not disable information providing neither.
Cf WAI guidelines.
