Most people start by learning code, but I didnt. I personally went to a class at UCLA during the summer and it was a lot of fun. Taught me the basics of flash, dreamweaver and photoshop. If you want maybe just a basic site you could try going to your local library or book store and buying a coding book, if you want a dynamic site I suggest learning Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Both cost a pretty penny but are well worth it. Thats my tip...

I got started by reading the book "Building A Website For Dummies". It is very basic and easy to follow. After you start to understand the basic html layout you can check out "PHP 5/MySQL programming for the absolute beginner" by Andy Harris. I also found this book very basic and easy to follow. You might also want to check out "PHP5 fast&easy web development" by Julie Meloni.
These are pretty basic books and they will give you a really good start on how to build webpages. I wish you the best of luck!

Here's a newbie question to add on to this thread:

What about website templates? Is that a good way for someone to start? And how customizable are they, can you change the photos for instance?

Any thoughts you all can share on using templates (is there such a thing and drag and drop website templates?) would be so appreciated!

Hi Stocks,

Starting on a website can be really easy if you have the right tools with you. We recommend using Dreamweaver as your HTML editor as there is very little you need to learn to create and maintain a simple website. We also recommend you download one of our free dreamweaver templates from http://www.smartwebby.com/website_te..._templates.asp and play around with it to create you first website. All the help you might need to work around the website using dreamweaver can be got from our website free tutorials.

Happy learning!

P.S. Even if you don't have dreamweaver try out the free templates they are quite simple to use in any HTML editor if you know how to!

Hi Selkie,

Web site Templates can be a boon for you if you know exactly what to get and where to get it from. Dreamweaver templates are especially easy to use as they are easy to customize and site maintenence can be learnt and done very quickly. Templates can come in handy for personal websites and quick fix solutions but for business web sites we recommend custom built designs from a professional design house as it lends autheticity to the business.

Do take a look at our top quality dreamweaver templates for instant download at http://www.smartwebby.com/website_templates/default.asp - you can easily edit the photos and make all other changes using the customization guide included with the download and our easy-to-follow online tutorials on dreamweaver and fireworks.

We also offer absolutely free dreamweaver templates which can be downloaded from http://www.smartwebby.com/website_te..._templates.asp

Hope this helps!

Okay, for those of you who don't want to spend $400 for a program like Dreamweaver, there is hope! You can build a website for free without too much trouble. I learned HTML a few years back and there is really nothing to it. HTML is comprised of predefined items called tags. When I first learned, I went to a website called Webmonkey. I quickly and easily learned HTML, and continued on to CSS (cascading style sheet) and am currently working with server side languages. That should get you started. A suggested program to get your hands on is Adobe Photoshop. It is rather pricey, but is much more valuable than Dreamweaver. With it, you can create and manipulate images, but the use for a web designer is to create their own templates.

Hope that helps you ,
Micah
