One of my clients wants to add an online forum (moderated) to their website. I was thinking an external forum (rather than custom) with all the bells and whistles would be best. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a good online forum source? Even something like this webmasters forum...

Thanks!

by external do you mean not on the same server of the site?

if you mean the forum on the same server i'm using wBB which i highly recommend, i'm also using XMB which i would also recomend.

XMB is better if you dont want to modify the coding as it already has Sub-Forums and Quick Reply installed, but if you didn't mind modifying code wBB is better .

The most commenly used free forum is phpBB, it is a quite good forum, their are lots of sites that host phpbb forums for free but most place ads on them, just do a search on google and you'll find a few.

Yes. I have used phpBB2 and I have no complaints at all, and I dont use banners either. Also they are really easy to set up and configure.

i used to use phpBB, the only problem i had with it was when my forum became quite active and as i had alot of hacks installed, it caused mySQL errors, thats why i moved to wBB and XMB.
