Hey
I am planning on building a gaming site but not sure on how it should be done. I was going to just build it and use PHP & MySQL to pull articles/news/reviews and stuff from a database and display the descriptions on the main page but was wondering whether it might be a better idea to just use a CMS as I was going to have a community forum as well.

I dont know much about CMS' and the benefits/downfalls but I doon't know any PHP/MySQL either and am currently learning. Would it be easier to use a CMS or should I just do it with PHP & MySQL anyway as it would be a good way of learning.

Thanks in advance for all your insight!

hey, poly is from vgamin. Yeah, vgamin is the best place for gaming info. I can directly give you the link to the list of gaming cms's at the end of the post.

Making a cms on your own takes way too much time and is pretty hard if you are just starting php. At first, starting with a pre-made cms is better. Personal opinion, for free cms's, onecms is good if you don't know much about php/mysql while ncaster is great if you are good at customizations and know php. It has alot of open ended features. While for paid, vgportal 2.5 costs $120 and its code is a tad bit sloppy for the price (better than free of course), but it has regular updates so it is improving and you can also customize alot with php knowledge. Cigmas is going to come out with version 2 this month which will be about $150, but it should have the best and most pro code of all. It will also be very customizable with php knowledge.

Overall, get ncaster for free or vgportal 2 now/cigmas 2 when it comes out. If you buy cigmas now for $75, you get version 1 and get a free upgrade to version 2. A very good choice as the coder of the cms is great. I know him and his code should be near flawless compared to others. If you have php knowledge, it will be great for you, as will the others.
