I find it extremely difficult to start creating a web page. I can never think of anything, in terms of design. What are some things you lovely people here at WT do before or during the designing process of a website? I really could use anything you guys have to say.

Thanks,
Micah

First define the website purpose, than make a draft with the main elements. Think of every detail. Be sure that you have defined to correct keywords that will be well recognized by Search Engines.

If you are not involved in web design find someone who can create your web site.

Good Luck

I usually just go to www.templatemonster.com to collect ideas from templates and find ways implement them in to my design.

Taking the first step to designing a site can often be difficult. I resort back to pen and paper and ensure I have a good idea of what features/links/images/ I'll be using, but most of all who my target audience will be.

Browsing similar sites for ideas and layout and design is the next step, however you don't need to take your idea's from templates, even layouts in magazines and newspapers can be used. Remember that the site you will be creating has to be appealing to the eye, so website templates aren't your only resource.

When reading a book, you know that you can find out more by turning the page and the information you are looking for will be there. Navigation on a website is just as important as the content itself. Finding your way around and being able to find the information you are looking for needs to be as simple as possible. Simply adding a search box to the site does not resolve the problem of finding all the information. How can someone search for something that they don't even know is there?

Making changes?
Once you've designed a site, what about making changes? There is nothing worse than designing a full site and then deciding you want to change something. Cut your website into sections and ensure you can update them accordingley. Creating a template page with all the features of the site included is often a good starting point. Once you've got your template up and running, all you need is content...

Hehehe. Looks like your dry out for inspiration.

Like with most things in my life, I plan. I even plan a plan.

Step 1:
Everybody go surfing!
There is no better way (from what I have come across) to get inspiration than from the source of which your medium is going to be for. This means you should always check out other sites on the Internet. Buy a site directory book for the better-ended designed sites. Also try using irregular URLs. The common *caugh* boring *caugh* ones were taken up during the early days, so only cool ones are available.

Checking out other people's design sites (personal pages) is also another way in which you can try and get some inspiration.

If all else fails, then go directly to the source (within the source). A premium web template site, e.g. http://www.templatemonster.com They may be professionally designed templates, but looking at the previews of them is always helpful.

Step 2:
Saddle Up!
Its no use just looking at some sites and generally getting a picture in your head, you need to keep the original resources fresh in front of you. So, what better way than to save any images, take screenshots. Do anything to capture that little bit of magic.

Step 3:
Incy, wincy, spider!
Sound familiar? Now that you have your media, it is time to do something with it. Make a spider diagram (brainstorm) or even a more complex item, the mind map. Do something with colour and vibrance (most designers are visual learners, therefore benefit from visual stimulae, if you are not visually stimulated, this is the wrong industry to be in). Put down anything that comes to mind; draw, write, just do something that will help.

Step 4:
Lock and load!
You now have one of the hardest parts done. But here comes a slightly harder part. Drawing everything together. I find it useful to draw (on graph paper) a detailed construction of what I see in my mind (the site). From there, I start with a size, then I move onto the borders and so on. Instead of colouring (because I can't colour greatly) I use labels to explain the parts. Remember, as soon as you start designing in on the screen, it is easier and quicker to change / adapt.

Step 5:
Hard days night!
It will take me up to a whole day just to finally produce my default layout. I will change it so many times through making it, that sometimes it holds no resemblance to the original on the paper, but in my eyes that is a good thing. The one on paper is often very similar to a site I recently researched upon. So to have a changed layout on screen is better.

It may take several days for you to complete your default layout. Like me, you might even think about something for your site just before you fall to sleep.

Step 6:
Completed!
All you can do now is sit back and once in a while, you will get a new inspiration for your site.

My web pages are based on what the page is about, sometimes I have to think about this for awhile. Personally I don't use templates, although they are very handy for a webmaster who has multiple functions and doesn't have the time to design.

For instance my husband's site is western theme, my site is ocean theme. Each link to a page is a bit different, different graphics, different layout, different backgrounds, even different text, but basically the same theme.

Why don't you tell us your theme of the web page, maybe we could help you come up with some designing ideas? At one time or another I think each webmaster has been stuck coming up with some new designing ideas, I know I have....

I'm in school and currently it is still summer vacation. I get a little bored and want to do something with my time, so creating a website is a good way to pass the time. I guess something neutral because I really don't have any purpose for it, althought it would be nice to use it in the future with I do have one.

Another resource that I use is to just pick through www.coolhomepages.com. It is not to rip off other people's designs, but often times appreciating others' innovation can spark some of your own.
