Absolute/Relative postions

I have been trying to figure out how to get my layer to quit moving around my page...so I was searching through here and found that setting it to be relative postion would do the trick, but when I go in and change it from absolute to relative the layer just disappears/deletes itself. Not sure why its doing this. Any help would be nice.

BTW: I created the site and naviagtion buttons with photoshop/image ready and then put them into dreamweaver, which is where I am having trouble put in the content text....I am putting my content text inside a layer which will sit where the text needs to show up on the page. Have a look at my site here: http://www.6stringdesigns.com/smokinscents and you will notice that the scroll bar and the words "TEST" shifted to the right. The scroll bar should be to the right edge of the page. Let me know if you guys know how I can get my layer to quit moving around my page.

Thanks!

With you having set it all out absolutely you will find that any relative or float elements (layers) will not do as you expect. You will have to change all abs positions to relative and to be honest if your going relative take the plunge and go with floats instead.

But then its down to you as the designer to tinker with it. I think absolute positioning is definately not the way to go when designing a site. A page perhaps but not a site.

Also you can lower/ raise your layer (or DOM) with absolute positioning by using Z-index; it only works with abs (if memory serves me).

On further inspection i see that its pretty much table based. Forget what I said and think about using pure css for it all instead of tables. Thats where my floats above come into their own.

Of course tables are usefull and its wise to use them, but use them spareingly (we got CSS now).
