Hi would someone please help me with regard to making pages which have a centred background image and then navigation positioned ON TOP of the background image.

How tough is it to do this?

I have only ever made sites using layers - but you can not centre layers which overlap.

I am going from the ground up with this guys so please help me out or point me in the direction of some real basic tutorials!

Thanks

Actually you can make <div>s overlap each other. By positioning them absolute the element is taken out of the document flow so does not occupy space or affect other elements in the document. However it does mean for it to be effective you will need to be using a fixed width layout, so while they could be centered in your design they may not be centred in the browser viewport.

I posted the code you need in another thread of yours on the same subject

The same code will also work for any element where you need a centred image.

W3Schools CSS Background

That's not strictly true. You can do things such as aligning elements to the right side of the page instead of the left, therefore stretching with the browser width. Not sure about centering though, I'd have to try it... (maybe by setting left & right margins?)
