Need advice on using photos as "buttons"

Hello forum!

I need some advice/suggestions on using dull, square photos as buttons on a website. The client, who owns a pilates studio, wants to show various pieces of equipment on the front page, which will be used as a button to go to a separate page to show the entire photo and a description about that piece of equipment.

Although the front page is in the beginning stages and I'm playing around with different layouts, as of now I have the page set up vertically in thirds...the top third is the name/logo of the studio, the middle third is a rectangular color picture of the studio, and the bottom third will be the square photos and additional info.

My creativity problem is the square-ness of the photos in the bottom third...they just doesn't fit...it makes the page look so dull and symmetrical. Is there a way to make the photos look more appealing and different? Eventually, the black and white photos will turn to color on "mouseover", but for now, it's just boring!

(I'm not able to upload my photo to show what I am talking about....)

Any suggestions on how I can jazz up the site?

Thanks in advance!!

1) This probably belongs in "Website Review and Suggestions"
2) If your website isn't online and there is no way to get it online, take a screenshot and upload it to a free image hosting service so people can see it, instead of visualizing it. You'll get better suggestions that way.

I would comment, but what I'm seeing in my head is probably totally different than what you're website looks like.

Or if you want to keep the original structure, why not have the 'inactive' photos in colour and when you hover over them, they get replaced with versions that have a different hue?

I did a website for an oral history about aircraft and made the navigation buttons airplanes. I liked the effect. I actually did the on and off buttons as different aircraft. The aircraft were all ones that were included in the history.

See www.georgespangenberg.com to see what I am talking about.

You could even do something fun like have the pieces of equipment rotate when you click on the button.

You could try making the original images black n white like how you have it but put a border on it... if you use photoshop try putting a stroke on it. and make it so when mouse over it changes to same photo but colored... or vice versa. Or you can make the image dark, or like you have it, and then when mouse is over it can light up... to see what I mean check out this page on a clan website that I'm working on... www.free.hostultra.com/~iconz/theteam.htm

There are many effects you can do with it involving rollovers, you just have to get creative
